The News from the Gulf is getting worse and worse. It’s almost paralyzing.
Essentially, what the Senator is saying is that the pipe leading down to the oil may be leaking. The oil isn’t just leaking from the pipe at the top but that it may be leaking into the ground from lower and there may be no way to stop it except through a relief well which isn’t expected to be done until August.

So what, everybody knows the cap is not adequate,you mean to say, they cannot bring in other oil companies to bring in more equipment to stop this leak. In my heart I think their could be a great deal more done to stop this leak. This is a national emergency ,the president should stop at nothing to get the oil companies to end this emergency. Bring in the tankers to pump up this oil,all inventions should be used together,stop the red tape,and use everything possible,we are supposed to be the most advanced country in the world, for what bombs only!
The question is just how much deception has been going on all along about this?
3 or 4 days ago we learned Obama knew how serious the Oil Volcano was going to be from the beginning.
Yet only a minimal effort was made to protect the beaches and wildlife.
It has seems to me all along that the hinky little thing they show on the Live Feed can not be the source of ALL this oil.
I have a feeling that all of the effort in the world couldnt keep this oil from hitting the beaches if it leaks for months more. I want to know why they arent drilling multiple relief wells in case one fails.
Steve it was reported, this morning in the news briefing by the Rear Admiral in charge right now that they are drilling more than one well..and they are currently between 8-10,000 feet below the surface, in order for them to be effective, the need to be at about 18,000 feet…
That is encouraging. They should have every company in the gulf starting relief wells right now. I read somewhere that England requires them in the north sea so a well can quickly be killed if necessary.

My question is, Why do they have the same old clean-up methods,they had thirty years ago, why ? They have put no exploration money into new clean up technologies methods. Could somebody please tell me why BP does not give the MSD data sheets on the dispersants to all medical personnel aiding the sick who have helped in the clean-up.Why isn’t our government forcing BP to hand over the MSD sheets of the toxins they are using to the medical staff. Our government is working hand in hand with BP,that is my opinion,and this environmental accident will be in litigation for years,with the tax payers will fit the bill. Only this country,money rules, Canada,Brazil all drill relief valves before the actual process begins, this shows profits come first.
They have two relief valves being drilled. My question is why hasn’ t BP handed out MSD sheets on the dispersants being used to the medical staff they is treating the people that are sick. These people seem to have the same symptoms as the the people who helped in the Exxon Valdese.

To Kt; If they had a closed channel, a doppler effect could help,a transit time sonic meter could do the trick.In fact if they wanted they could put two transducers on the bottom piece of pipe,180 degrees apart, and possibly get a flow rate that way, sonic method. But my feeling is they do not want to go through the trouble of finding the true flow rate. The transducers would correspond to the diameter of the pipe, and type of material the pipe is made of and the viscosity of the oil in question.

The time to fix this mistake was before the drilling began. Instead of hammering Obama for taking BP money maybe instead think about how the entire system of campaign finance corrupts the system from top to bottom. When any corporation (whether big oil, big pharma, big banks, etc) can “buy” the regulators, “buy” the legislators and “buy” the executive branch, bad shit is bound to happen.
Go ahead and rail about this mess but you might want to save your breath to take on the whole frigging corrupt system and try to change that instead. Where to start? Elect officials that DO not take corporate money for one thing.
All of us who use oil are culpable as well.
Just to put this thing into perspective, I remembered the Santa Barbara oil spill of 1969 that made Californians go ballistic. Union Oil’s blow-out well six miles offshore puts between 80-100 thousand barrels of oil in 10 days, on the Channel Islands and beaches around Santa Barbara (north of LA). Result: a moratorium on West Coast drilling that lasted for decades; exception to moratorium Gulf Coast.
Lobbying and operating mantra of oil drilling interests – an environmental disaster like this can never happen again, and we have contingency plans in place to mitigate any event. Don’t worry, be happy.
Obama says BP’s CEO should be fired. I say fired and criminally charged (and if current laws don’t allow- they should be amended to make it so in the future, right down to the drilling platform “person in control,” whoever that is). The current investigation has revealed that nobody knew who that was at the time of the incident. Really? REALLY?

We have put billions of more dollars into space research than into our own oceans and we conduct ourselves there with no real remedies in case of disaster. How can the human species claim superior intelligence is beyond me. Most wildlife do not go about destroying the very thing that provides its sustenance. And as CC says, we are all to blame. CBS News reported on Sunday Morning that as of that time, the amount of oil spilled into the Gulf was roughly equal to what Americans use in one hour. As for myself, my shame knows no end here.

To jdubya; The entire system needs to get all lobbyist out,I mean on both sides, I agree this is the only thing that will clean it up,as for Obama he portrayed himself a much different person, this is why I am so stunned. Get good progressives, that would help, but read what I just put up on Goldman Sachs and Halliburton,besides other countries have more control over their government in a good way.
We need to get rid of all corporate and private campaign funding and go to completely publicly funded elections. Until that happens, nothing will change politically. Would be nice if we could limit the campaign season, too. Canada gets it done in about 2 months, albeit they have a parliamentary system.

dcookie – that article explicitly states that corporate and private money is still involved in the Arizona campaign finance policy. So their election system is not completely publicly funded. ALL corporate and private money need to be eliminated, not just limited.
